Big Cats in Washington


Established in 1991, Cat Tales Zoological Training Center rescues big cats (and other exotic animals) and gives them a home. The center serves as a training school for students who come from all over the world to learn the profession of zookeeping.

Located in 15 miles east of Seattle in Issaquah, Washington, Cougar Mountain focuses on endangered species and education. It features one of the top state of art tiger exhibits in the country.

Olympic Game Farm houses many animals used exclusively in Walt Disney Studios films, filming at the farm and on many different set locations. 'Charlie the Lonesome Cougar' featured a cougar housed at Olympic Game Farms. The farm's exhibits include the historic Studio Barn, which is full of props, lights, antiques, and memorabilia of its filming history.

Located on the 29 acres inside the 700-acre Tacoma Washington Park, Point Defiance Aquarium features many animals that live around the Pacific Rim, as well as exotic species from around the world. It places much emphasis on conservation efforts. 'Cats of the Canopy,' a new exhibit featuring Clouded Leopards, will open in September 2011.

Woodland Park is located north of Seattle on 92 acres. It is home to more than 300 animal species. Woodland Park places emphasis on education and conservation efforts. It awards $10,000 annually to jaguar conservation projects.
