Big Cats in Texas


Over 600 animals from around the world are located in Nelson Park. Featured are a variety of conservation programs, including Species Survival Plan programs for many big cats, including African Lion, Jaguar, and Ocelot.

Founded in 1955, this big cat site is located in Thompson Park on 15 acres. It features over 45 species of animals.

Located in the Hill Country just outside of the city, this Big Cat spot is home to more than 300 animals representing over 100 different species. It places emphasis on big cat conservation, and has many species on exhibit.

Cameron Park is located on 52 acres in Waco. It houses more than 1,731 animals, representing 300 species. Cameron Park emphasizes conservation and participates in the Species Survival Plan.

Texas' largest zoo is located on 106 acres. It participates in the Species Survival Plan to help breed and preserve Sumatran Tigers and Indochinese Tigers. The big cats may be viewed in the 'Endangered Tiger Habitat' exhibit, which features heated rocks, water holes and enrichment activities and toys.

Over 220 species of animals are nestled on 35 acres in El Paso. Exhibits include 'Animals of Africa,' which features African Lions, and 'Animals of Asia,' which displays endangered Malayan Tigers and Amur Leopards.

Founded in 1909, Fort Worth is one of the oldest zoos in Texas. It currently houses close to 7,000 native and exotic animals. It features 12 permanent exhibits, including a 'Cheetah' exhibit and 'Asian Falls,' which is home to a pair of breeding Malayan Tigers.

Dedicated to wildlife conservation, education and recreation, Houston features many big cat species in natural habitats. This Big Cat site renovated its Jaguar exhibit in 2011 to give the cats more space, a waterfall and a new pool.

Founded in 1988 as nonprofit, IEAS provides a permanent home for big cats and other exotic animals that have been "abused, abandoned, neglected, confiscated, or previously owned by people unwilling or unable to provide for them," according to the IEAS website. At least 51 big cats currently reside at IEAS. They are provided with space, pools and houses.
